Windows 11 to Add Built-in Internet Speed Test Without Browser
Microsoft moves to integrate performance tools directly into the OS interface

A Change to Improve User Experience
Windows 11 users who frequently monitor their internet connection quality have a welcome update to look forward to. Microsoft has begun testing a new feature that allows for internet speed checks directly within the operating system interface, without the need to launch a web browser. This change was spotted in the latest Windows 11 preview build (26340.9767).
Currently, when users attempt to measure speed via Windows tools, the system automatically opens a browser and redirects them to a Bing search results page. This process is not only inconvenient but has often been perceived as an attempt by Microsoft to artificially inflate Bing traffic. With this new update, the functionality will be fully integrated into the Quick Settings panel.
How the New Feature Works
Windows Insiders can already test connection speeds by clicking the network icon located in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar. Microsoft states that this approach is significantly faster and more convenient. Results appear instantly on the screen, removing the need to open additional windows or wait for a search engine to load.

Although the feature is currently available only on the Experimental channel, it is expected to roll out to all users in the near future. This move is significant as it addresses long-standing user criticism regarding Microsoft's aggressive marketing policies. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with system tools being used primarily to promote Microsoft services.
Why This Matters
Improving public sentiment toward Windows 11 is a key priority for Microsoft this year. Such "integrated advertisements" and forced redirects have frequently drawn criticism, leading some users to consider switching to alternative operating systems, such as Linux.
Consequently, streamlining services like the speed test by embedding them organically into the OS is a welcome step. It suggests that the company is beginning to prioritize user convenience over the promotion of its own services. For users looking to monitor connection stability, this change will make troubleshooting and performance checks significantly easier.
