What Would Ben Affleck’s Cancelled Batman Movie Have Looked Like?
Joe Manganiello shares new insights into the ambitious, unproduced project.

Revenge and the Destruction of Gotham
For years, film fans have speculated about the standalone Batman movie directed by Ben Affleck. The project, which was ultimately cancelled and replaced by Matt Reeves' The Batman, remained shrouded in mystery. However, actor Joe Manganiello, who was cast as Slade Wilson (Deathstroke), has now detailed Affleck’s vision in his memoir, Bloodlines.
According to Manganiello, the plot was intended to be a superhero version of David Fincher’s thriller, The Game. Deathstroke’s primary goal was to systematically dismantle Bruce Wayne’s life, fueled by the false belief that Batman had killed his son. The revenge plot was massive in scale, involving a break-in at the Batcave, the kidnapping of Alfred Pennyworth, and, most shockingly, the murder of Police Commissioner Jim Gordon.
Batgirl and Arkham-Style Combat
As the story progressed, Batgirl was set to appear, teaming up with Batman to take on Deathstroke in a confrontation that would have been nearly fatal for both heroes. The script included a dramatic escape on a commuter train to heighten the tension. It is notable that Batgirl’s appearance in the DC universe never came to fruition, even when a standalone film was nearly finished, yet she held a significant role in Affleck’s vision.
The climactic scene, Manganiello explained, was to be a one-on-one battle on the streets of Gotham. Affleck wanted the fight to mirror the style of the Batman: Arkham Asylum video games, aiming for a visually unprecedented spectacle. The actor recalls that Affleck was incredibly optimistic while working on the project, confident that the film would meet the highest standards.
What Awaits Batman Fans?
Although we will never see Affleck’s version, the DC universe is moving in a new direction. Under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the studio is working on projects such as The Brave and the Bold and The Batman Part 2. Notably, the new costume worn by Robert Pattinson bears a resemblance to the armour seen in the Arkham games.
For audiences in Georgia and beyond, these details confirm just how complex and volatile the process of creating major Hollywood franchises can be. Despite cancelled projects, the history of Batman remains one of the most popular topics, promising many new surprises in the future.
