Tim Sweeney Criticises Valve: AI Disclosure is a Political Act

Conflict Between Industry Leaders
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has launched a series of critical statements on social media directed at Valve. His frustration stems from Steam's new policy, which requires game developers to specify in detail how they have used artificial intelligence (AI) in their products. Sweeney argues that this requirement is not merely informational but constitutes a "political act" that places undue pressure on developers.
Under Valve's policy, developers must disclose how AI was used to create graphics, sound effects, narrative elements, or localisation. However, Steam’s rules do not require disclosure if AI was used solely to improve workflow efficiency. Sweeney opposes this approach, claiming that such declarations make developers targets for "hate campaigns."
AI as a Strategic Priority
The position taken by the head of Epic Games is not coincidental. The company recently announced a strategic shift, directing its resources toward maximum AI acceleration. Furthermore, the company states that the latest version of the Epic Games Launcher was created in part with the help of generative AI. For Sweeney, AI is an inseparable part of technological progress, and he argues that restricting it hinders the development of the industry.

Critics, including prominent game developers, do not share Sweeney's position. They believe consumers have a right to know what they are buying and what technological methods were used to create a product. In response, Sweeney compared the disclosure of AI usage to publicly declaring one's political views, a comparison that has drawn negative reactions and cynicism from the gaming community.
Steam’s Dominance and a Silent Response
Despite Tim Sweeney's sharp rhetoric, Valve has traditionally refrained from engaging directly in the conflict. Gabe Newell’s company continues to uphold its policy and develop the Steam platform. Statistics support Valve: this month, Steam set another record with 43.5 million concurrent users active on the platform.
This dispute remains relevant for developers and players in Georgia, as they actively use both platforms. Steam's transparency policy, which serves consumer interests, is likely to remain unchanged, while Epic Games' focus on AI will likely lead to further technological innovations that will ultimately influence the development of the industry.
