TikTok Accused of Profiting from Child Exploitation Content

TikTok is at the centre of a major new scandal. According to information shared by current and former employees, the platform hosts material depicting the sexual exploitation of minors, from which the company allegedly derives financial gain. The accusations suggest that TikTok’s leadership was aware of these issues but failed to take adequate measures to address them.
Financial Gain from Illegal Content
Staff claim the platform operates a system allowing users to pay for access to suspicious content involving minors. Since TikTok collects a commission on these transactions, the practice could be classified as a financial crime. Under existing legislation, social networks are required to immediately report any instances of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and illegal revenue generated through their platforms to the appropriate authorities.
Furthermore, documents indicate that the company deliberately avoided investigating user ages. Employees state that leadership feared that submitting research results to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) would lead to unfavourable legal consequences. It was also revealed that minors actively exploited loopholes to bypass age restrictions and conceal their activity from parents.

Flaws in Safety Systems
The problems extend beyond sexually explicit content. In internal communications, employees expressed concern that material depicting suicide and self-harm is actively circulating on the platform, with algorithms failing to effectively combat such content. As one of the world's most popular applications, TikTok hosts a vast number of teenage users, making this issue particularly critical.
The Company's Position
TikTok has categorically denied the allegations. In an official statement, the company claimed the information is biased and that the documents were "selectively presented at the behest of lawyers involved in litigation." TikTok’s press office maintains that these accusations aim to distort the company's history and mislead the public regarding their actual approach to child safety.
Despite the company’s defensive stance, this scandal once again brings the issue of social media accountability to the forefront. For users in Georgia, where TikTok is one of the most frequently used platforms, such allegations serve as a significant signal that digital safety and parental control must become a priority.
