The search for underground hydrogen reserves has evolved into a genuine global race. Across the world, dozens of startups are attempting to locate gas resources deep within the Earth that could offer humanity a carbon-free energy source. As reported by MIT Technology Review, investments and exploration efforts in this field are in an active phase, though achieving tangible results has proven difficult thus far. Among the startups involved in the search is Koloma, which is backed by Bill Gates. The company is conducting research in the U.S. Midwest, attempting to reach ancient oceanic rocks linked to the natural production of hydrogen. Despite high expectations and large-scale efforts, these exploration works have not yet yielded concrete results. ## Scientific Calculations and Current Challenges Researchers estimate that trillions of tons of hydrogen (H₂) are generated within the Earth's crust. Theoretically, extracting even a small fraction of this resource would be sufficient to meet global hydrogen demand for centuries, representing a major breakthrough in the energy sector. Despite this colossal potential, no team has yet announced the discovery of a commercially viable reservoir. Furthermore, public data regarding findings or research details remains very scarce. The exploration process is technologically complex, leading experts to remain cautious about how quickly the industry can practically harness underground gas. Although underground hydrogen remains only a prospect for now, the growing demand for clean energy sources is compelling companies to continue their research. If the technology proves successful, the extraction of eco-friendly fuel could fundamentally transform the global energy market in the future.
