Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Film Officially Put on Indefinite Hold

A Long Wait Comes to a Halt
Acclaimed director Taika Waititi, known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, has officially confirmed that his long-awaited Star Wars film has been shelved. The director made the announcement during a press conference for his latest film, Klara and the Sun. When asked about the status of his collaboration with screenwriter Tony McNamara on the space saga, Waititi provided a direct answer: "Unfortunately, we are putting that project on hold and are currently working on other things."
Years of Uncertainty
Rumours regarding Waititi’s involvement in the Star Wars universe first surfaced in January 2020. Following his massive success within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, interest from Disney and Lucasfilm seemed like a natural progression. However, the status of the project remained ambiguous for years. In 2021, the director claimed the story was ready, and in 2022, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy expressed hope that the film would be released by the end of 2023.
The reality proved quite different. Despite reports in April 2023 suggesting the director was still working on the script, the project ultimately lost its priority. Waititi noted that he currently has about four other films in development that he is focused on bringing to life.
What Lies Ahead for the Project?
Although the film is currently "frozen," the director has not completely ruled out a return to it. Waititi jokingly remarked that "even an ice age comes to an end." However, for fans who have been waiting six years for new details, the announcement remains a disappointment.
Meanwhile, the director's latest work, Klara and the Sun—starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams—is set for release on October 23, 2026. Despite the star-studded cast, initial reviews have been critical, holding a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For fans of the Star Wars franchise, this news serves as another reminder of the complexities involved in major studio projects, where creative visions and business interests often struggle to align.
