Sony Unveils New LYTIA 720 Smartphone Sensor
The new 50-megapixel sensor promises superior low-light performance and enhanced dynamic range.

New Technology for Mobile Photography
Sony has taken a new step in the mobile camera market with the announcement of the LYTIA 720 sensor. This 50-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor aims to further enhance the photo and video capabilities of smartphones, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. According to the company, the new product is a significant technological advancement over the previous generation LYTIA 700.
The sensor measures 1/1.56 inches, with each pixel size at 1.0 micrometres. However, the primary innovation lies in its internal structure. Sony has utilised its proprietary Ultra High Conversion Gain (UHCG) technology, which allows the sensor to drastically reduce noise in low-light shots. Official data indicates that noise levels have been reduced by 50% compared to the previous generation, resulting in much cleaner and more detailed images.
Dynamic Range and Video Recording
The capabilities of the LYTIA 720 extend beyond noise reduction. The UHCG technology is combined with a Hybrid Frame-HDR (HF-HDR) system, enabling the sensor to achieve a 100dB dynamic range. This means the camera handles high-contrast scenes much more effectively, particularly when a frame contains both very bright and very dark areas simultaneously.

As a result, users will receive photos where details in the shadows are better preserved, and bright areas are not overexposed. Sony claims that the resulting images are visually very close to what the human eye sees in the real world. For video enthusiasts, it is significant that the sensor supports 4K resolution HDR recording at 60 frames per second, which is a rare and welcome feature for mid-range devices.
Impact on the Smartphone Market
Sony states that mass production and shipment of the LYTIA 720 will begin at the start of next month. This means that in the near future, we will see numerous new smartphones equipped with this specific sensor. It is likely that the LYTIA 720 will become a popular choice for mid-to-high-range devices.
This news is relevant for users globally, as Sony sensors are used in most of the world's leading smartphones. Technological progress in mobile photography means that even more affordable smartphones will eventually be able to capture professional-level photos and videos. We will be monitoring which manufacturers are the first to integrate this new technology into their devices.
