Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: A Foldable Smartphone $300 Cheaper Than Its Rival

Competition in the foldable smartphone market is reaching a new level. Following the official release of the Apple iPhone Duo, consumer attention has shifted toward this segment. However, for those who did not place a pre-order, obtaining the device involves significant waiting times. During this period, Samsung has decided to offer consumers an interesting and more budget-friendly alternative in the form of the Galaxy Z Fold8.
Price and Technical Specifications Comparison
The starting price for the 256GB model of the Apple iPhone Duo is $2,000. Samsung has implemented an additional $200 discount on top of its existing base price, making the Galaxy Z Fold8 a total of $300 cheaper. This factor is significant for those seeking a premium foldable smartphone without wanting to overpay.
Technically, the Samsung device is much more compact. The Galaxy Z Fold8 measures 9.7 millimetres in thickness, while the iPhone Duo is 11.3 millimetres. The difference in weight is even more noticeable: the Samsung weighs 201 grams, whereas the Apple competitor weighs 254 grams. The screen sizes are nearly identical, with both featuring a 7.6-inch internal display and external screens measuring 5.5 and 5.4 inches respectively.
Performance and Capabilities
Both smartphones are equipped with the latest generation chipsets: the Galaxy Z Fold8 utilizes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while the iPhone Duo features the Apple A20 Pro. Battery capacities are virtually the same, with 4,800 mAh in the Samsung and 4,883 mAh in the Apple, meaning battery life will likely depend on the energy efficiency of the processors. Both models feature dual-camera systems, with Samsung using 50MP sensors and Apple using 48MP sensors; however, it is worth noting that both lack a dedicated telephoto lens.
At this stage, the selection of large-format foldable smartphones in the US market is limited. Although Motorola has similar projects in development, they are not expected to appear on the market in the coming months. There are currently no signs of similar strategic moves from Google.
For the Georgian market, this news is significant because global price changes and competition eventually impact local retail chains. Samsung's decision to lower prices and offer a lighter, thinner alternative could prove decisive for consumers planning to purchase a foldable smartphone.
