Samsung Fined in South Korea Over Galaxy Smartphone Marketing

The South Korean Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a fine against Samsung for misleading its customers. The dispute centres on marketing campaigns for the Galaxy S21, S22, and Galaxy Tab S8 series, in which the company claimed these devices offered a "premium mobile gaming experience." In reality, however, the performance of these devices was significantly restricted.
The GOS Problem
At the heart of the criticism is the Game Optimizing Service (GOS), a system utility that automatically throttled CPU and GPU performance when running demanding games. Users frequently reported issues such as frame rate drops, screen freezing, and a noticeable decline in graphical quality. Samsung did not disclose these limitations, a practice the regulator deemed unfair.
Samsung maintains that GOS is a safety feature designed to ensure device stability during extended gaming sessions. The company stated that it has already released a software update allowing users to remove these system-imposed limits and utilize their devices at full capacity if they choose.

Legal Battle Continues
Despite the commission's ruling, Samsung intends to challenge the fine in court. The company maintains that it has done nothing wrong, noting that similar disputes in South Korea and abroad have either been resolved or dismissed. The controversy surrounding GOS first emerged in March 2022, when Samsung introduced the initial modifications to the system.
For users of Galaxy S21 or S22 devices, this case highlights the risks associated with software manipulation by technology giants. While settings are now available to disable these restrictions, such disputes serve as a reminder to the tech industry regarding the necessity of transparency. Moving forward, companies will likely be required to be more explicit about the technical limitations they implement within their devices.
