Qualcomm Denies Overheating Rumours Regarding Snapdragon 8 Elite
The company claims that performance optimization is handled by manufacturers, not the chipset architecture itself.

Recent reports in the tech industry suggested that Samsung’s upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S27 Ultra, might launch exclusively with Exynos processors. Rumours claimed this shift was due to overheating and instability issues with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset. However, Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer has dismissed these claims on X as inaccurate.
What is actually happening?
According to a Qualcomm representative, the reports regarding systemic overheating are untrue. The company explains that technical partners, such as Samsung, manage chipset performance themselves to achieve an optimal balance between power and energy efficiency. Consequently, results from internal tests conducted in Samsung’s laboratories may have been misinterpreted or could be specific to individual device configurations.
Modern mobile processors are now powerful enough to run PC-level games. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 features two primary cores clocked at 5.0 GHz, with an additional six cores reaching 4.0 GHz. While such high power presents a challenge for passive cooling systems, it does not mean the chip overheats during everyday use.

The evolution of mobile chipsets
In recent years, performance drops during prolonged use have been frequently observed in flagship smartphone testing. This phenomenon, known as thermal throttling, indicates that mobile chipsets are operating at the limit of their capabilities. Nevertheless, integrating active cooling systems, such as fans, remains a controversial topic in the industry, as it negatively impacts the device's thickness and design.
Qualcomm’s position is clear: the issue lies not in the chipset architecture, but in its optimization. The company suggests that other manufacturers manage to utilize the chipset's potential without overheating, which casts further doubt on the information attributed to Samsung.
For users who rely on smartphones for high performance, this discussion is significant as it influences the choice of premium devices for the coming year. Until independent tests are conducted, it is difficult to determine how effective this chipset will be in real-world conditions, though Qualcomm’s official response provides some reassurance at this stage.
