OpenAI Partner Reveals $10 Million Monthly Spend on AI Tokens
OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger explains the massive scale of testing for next-generation AI agents.

Colossal Costs in the Age of AI
The development of artificial intelligence demands vast financial resources, yet the figures emerging from industry leaders often exceed all expectations. Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, has been collaborating with OpenAI since February to develop a new generation of personal AI agents. During a conversation with Cloudflare CTO Dane Knecht at the Cloudflare Connect 2026 conference in San Francisco, Steinberger revealed that his monthly expenditure on tokens—the units of data processed by AI models—has reached $10 million.
This disclosure has sparked debate within the tech community. While the industry is focused on achieving financial efficiency, such massive spending raises questions regarding OpenAI’s operational strategy, particularly as these projects are funded by the company’s investors.
Infrastructure Challenges and Future Vision
Despite the startling cost figures, Steinberger highlighted the technical barriers currently hindering the widespread adoption of AI. He argues that existing infrastructure remains insufficient for modern demands. Steinberger believes that computational power must shift entirely to cloud computing to ensure users do not have to rely on the resources of their personal devices.
His vision is that in the near future, every individual will have a personal intelligent assistant. This assistant will not only aid in daily tasks but will also anticipate user needs. Consequently, rather than asking questions, we will receive answers in advance.
Security and Agent Autonomy
Steinberger suggests that a single agent will not be enough to handle complex tasks. He proposes a dual-system model: one agent executes the work, while a second monitors its actions and grants permissions. This "negotiation" process, he claims, ensures safety compliance and forces the agent to choose the simplest and most secure path to achieve a goal.
Although OpenAI’s investors are currently willing to absorb these high costs, market competition—including the anticipated IPO of Anthropic—will force the company to focus more on financial sustainability in the future. For users, this means that AI agents are becoming increasingly intelligent and autonomous, though their mass adoption will remain directly dependent on the evolution of cloud infrastructure.
