OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra: Enhanced Capabilities at Half the Price
The new model delivers improved reasoning and coding performance while slashing API costs by 50%.

OpenAI has expanded its artificial intelligence lineup with the addition of GPT-6.1 Terra. According to the company, this model sets a new standard for the balance between efficiency and cost, making it one of the most attractive options among current market competitors. The most significant update for users is the halving of API prices: while the previous generation, GPT-5.6 Terra, cost $2 per million input tokens, the new model offers the same volume for $1. A similar trend applies to output tokens, where the price has dropped from $10 to $5. Notably, the processing rate for cached data is now just $0.05 per million tokens, a quarter of the previous rate.
Performance and Intellectual Capabilities
Independent analytical platforms have identified GPT-6.1 Terra as a new benchmark for the "intelligence-per-dollar" ratio. In maximum reasoning mode, the model has significantly increased its efficiency compared to the previous generation, while the cost per task has been reduced threefold. Technically, the model excels in improved visual reasoning, more precise computer system control, and a more natural writing style. This makes it ideal for daily tasks such as interpreting technical drawings, drafting documents, and automatically filling out forms. In coding, the model achieved a 50.3% success rate on Terminal-Bench 4.0, a significant leap from the 21.5% result of the previous generation. However, OpenAI still recommends more powerful models, such as GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, for writing the most complex and extensive software code.
Safety and Agentic Capabilities
OpenAI has placed particular emphasis on automated software control. GPT-6.1 Terra has demonstrated the ability to reach the performance level of GPT-6 Astra, but at one-tenth the cost. Moreover, it completes tasks three times faster than its larger counterparts. In terms of safety, the model meets the company's "critical" standards. It utilizes the security mechanisms of GPT-6 Astra and significantly reduces the rate of hallucinations—the confident generation of incorrect information. Tests have shown that the model is much less likely to guess an answer when it lacks data, and its defense against indirect prompt injections—harmful instructions hidden in third-party content—has been improved. Currently, GPT-6.1 Terra is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users, as well as developers via the API. This development is also significant for the technology sector in Georgia, as lower API prices will allow local startups to implement advanced AI solutions into their services more affordably.
