OpenAI is Developing a Humanoid Robot

OpenAI, the industry leader behind ChatGPT and various consumer technologies, is venturing into a new field. CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that the company is working on a humanoid robot. Altman believes that adopting a human form is the most logical choice, as our world—ranging from doors and keyboards to everyday tools—is specifically designed to accommodate human anatomy. ## The Primary Challenge is the 'Brain' While physical construction is necessary, Altman views it as a secondary task. He argues that the most complex challenge is creating the 'brain' to control the machine. Simply having arms and legs is meaningless if the machine does not know how to operate in a real-world environment. The robot must be able to analyse data from cameras and sensors, interpret tasks, and coordinate movements. For example, when picking up a cup, it must precisely determine the handle's position, the required grip strength, and balance to avoid accidents. This process is far more complex than standard programming, as the physical world is full of unpredictable variables. ## What to Expect in the Future OpenAI is currently assembling a team of specialists in robotics, motion control, sensor systems, and machine learning. Dozens of job openings on the company's career page suggest the project is significant in scale. Notably, OpenAI has previous experience in this domain; through the Dactyl project, they taught a robotic hand to manipulate objects, though training was conducted entirely in simulation. Now, the company aims to translate that knowledge into the physical world. However, a fully functional robot is still some time away. Altman suggests that an interesting demonstration could arrive by 2027, but widespread adoption remains several years off. ## Goals and Reality OpenAI's current plans do not involve immediate deployment into every home. In the short term, the goal is to create multi-purpose robots that assist skilled workers with infrastructure tasks. Long-term, the company aims to develop a personal assistant to help with daily household chores. Despite the anticipation, there is no information yet regarding pricing, release dates, or privacy standards. With a robot moving through our homes equipped with cameras and microphones, safety is paramount. OpenAI faces the challenge of proving that its AI is not only intelligent but also reliable and secure.
