Artificial intelligence giant OpenAI is expanding its investments in hardware and imaging technologies. According to TechCrunch, the company has acquired smartphone camera developer startup Glass Imaging for $300 million.
Glass Imaging was founded by two former Apple engineers. Notably, the co-founders previously led the team responsible for creating and refining Apple's renowned Portrait Mode.
The purpose behind the deal
Glass Imaging actively works to improve smartphone camera optics and software processing. The startup's core objective is to extract maximum image quality from small-format sensors.
This acquisition indicates that OpenAI plans to integrate its multimodal systems more closely with photo and video hardware solutions. The former Apple engineers' expertise will help OpenAI deploy advanced image processing algorithms directly into mobile devices and cameras.
