New Method Enables Dolby TrueHD Support on Apple TV 4K
A new experimental approach allows for high-quality lossless audio playback on Apple's streaming hardware.

Despite its popularity, the Apple TV 4K has long been restricted by its limited audio format support. Officially, the device only supports Dolby Digital Plus, a compressed format designed for streaming services. However, audiophiles have long sought the ability to use the lossless Dolby TrueHD format, typically found on Blu-ray discs. Now, an independent developer known on Reddit as Agathorpt has found a way to bridge this gap.
How the new method works
The system does not transmit TrueHD directly, as Apple hardware does not support it. Instead, the audio stream is decoded, processing the sound and 3D Atmos positional data separately. This creates a simulated 9.1.6-channel audio system, which is then converted into Apple’s proprietary APAC (Apple’s Positional Audio Codec) format. As a result, the Apple TV 4K can play high-quality spatial audio that closely mirrors the original source.
This project relies on existing open-source libraries such as AetherEngine and LibTrueHD. The author’s goal was to create an alternative to existing closed-source native players, arguing that closed systems make users dependent on manufacturers and prevent the community from fixing bugs.

Installation requirements
At this stage, the method is not available as a ready-to-use application. Users must build it themselves using a Mac, Xcode, and an Apple developer account. The device must be running tvOS 26 or later. While the process requires technical expertise, early adopters report that the results are impressive and the sound quality is exceptionally clear.
What this means for users
It is important to note that this solution is currently in an experimental phase. There is an expectation that this technology will eventually be integrated into the Nuvio media player and other applications, which would significantly simplify the process. This is particularly relevant for those who use the Apple TV as the central hub of their home cinema setup.
Although the release of the 2026 Apple TV 4K did not generate much excitement among audio-video enthusiasts, such software hacks breathe new life into the device. For users who prefer the Apple ecosystem, this means they no longer have to compromise on audio quality, provided they are willing to perform some minor technical configurations.
