Modding the Mac Pro: A New Life for the Iconic 'Cheese Grater'
An ambitious crowdfunding campaign seeks to turn Apple's professional workstation into a DIY PC builder's dream.

New Life for the 'Cheese Grater'
The 2019 Apple Mac Pro, famously dubbed the "cheese grater" due to its unique perforated aluminium design, may soon find a second life. A group of enthusiasts has developed a conversion kit that allows users to retain the original Apple chassis while installing modern, standard PC components inside.
The project aims to combine the Mac Pro's distinctive aesthetic and functionality with the flexibility of standard computer hardware. Despite the appeal of the concept, the campaign on Kickstarter has yet to gain significant traction, having raised only $7 of its $10,686 goal so far.
What the Kit Offers
Priced at approximately $500, the kit provides the necessary mounting plates, adapters, and cables to house an ATX motherboard, a standard power supply, and a graphics card within the case. Crucially, the system maintains the Mac Pro's original front fans, power button, indicator light, and front-panel USB-C ports.
Using custom circuit boards, users can connect Apple's original cooling system and control elements to their new hardware. The kit is designed to support graphics cards up to 308 mm in length, with space for air coolers or liquid cooling systems up to 240 mm.
Challenges and Risks
While the concept is compelling, it is intended only for experienced PC builders. The process requires the careful removal of Apple's internal components and the precise installation of new parts. Furthermore, beyond the $500 kit, users must purchase all other components—such as the processor, memory, and motherboard—which significantly increases the total cost of the project.
It is worth noting that the structural changes are reversible, allowing users to revert to the original Apple hardware at any time. However, participating in crowdfunding campaigns always carries risks, including the possibility of delays or non-delivery. For enthusiasts of Apple's design, this project serves as an intriguing experiment, though its practical realization remains uncertain.
