Microsoft Reports $10 Billion in Revenue from OpenAI Partnership
The tech giant’s latest financial report highlights significant gains from its collaboration with OpenAI.

According to Microsoft’s latest financial report for the quarter ending September 30, the company generated $10 billion in revenue from commercial agreements with OpenAI. This figure, which encompasses revenue sharing and various services, represents nearly 11% of Microsoft’s total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion.
The Scale of Financial Ties
Notably, during the 2026 fiscal year, total revenue derived from OpenAI reached $24.1 billion. If this pace continues, Microsoft’s annual revenue from OpenAI-related agreements is projected to reach $40 billion. The report also indicates that OpenAI owes Microsoft $7.2 billion, an increase of $1.2 billion compared to the previous quarter.
Although Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, the relationship between the companies has shifted recently. Since October 2025, the partnership is no longer exclusive, allowing OpenAI to collaborate with other cloud providers. In exchange, OpenAI has committed to investing $250 billion into Microsoft’s Azure services.
Equity Changes and Future Outlook
Microsoft’s stake in OpenAI has slightly decreased, standing at 24% as of September, down from approximately 25% in June. The company did not specify the cause of this dilution, though the trend has been observed following the recapitalization in October 2025.
Despite increasing competition, OpenAI remains one of Microsoft’s most significant partners. Under existing agreements, OpenAI is obligated to share a portion of its revenue with Microsoft until 2030, a arrangement that remains strategically vital for both parties. For users in Georgia, these figures are significant as they illustrate how global tech leaders are investing massive capital into artificial intelligence development, which ultimately shapes the digital services we use every day.
