Lost Steam Deck Returned to Owner After Nine Months on a Train

Reddit is frequently a source of compelling and emotional stories, but a recent case has proven particularly impressive. A user under the pseudonym vgalz managed to locate and return a Steam Deck OLED that had been lost on a train nine months prior.
The handheld console was initially discovered by vgalz’s mother-in-law on an Amtrak train. Unfamiliar with the device or how to operate it, she kept it at her home for several months. During a weekend visit, she handed the console to her son-in-law, hoping he could help find the owner.
A Fruitless Search and Steam Support's Advice
vgalz immediately began the search. He posted in several thematic Reddit communities, including r/Steam, r/SteamDeck, and r/Amtrak. Additionally, he contacted Steam Support. Company representatives explained that due to privacy policies, they could not directly connect the finder with the owner, though they suggested he contact law enforcement.
The finder did not give up. He attempted to send a friend request to the account holder on Steam, tried to log in to identify the user, and even left a comment on Reddit for a user he suspected might be the owner.
A Nine-Month-Old Post and the Reunion
It eventually emerged that the true owner had posted about their loss in the r/SteamDeck subreddit nine months earlier. It was only after discovering this old record that the owner's identity could be verified.

After completing the verification process, vgalz shipped the Steam Deck to the owner via post—the device was wrapped in a bar soap box for protection.
"It took a little effort, but it is an amazing feeling to help this 'little guy' get back home," vgalz remarked. He also encouraged the community to perform acts of kindness whenever possible: "If we only look out for our own interests, the world becomes a terrible place. Each of us can be better."
This story is particularly significant given that prices for the Steam Deck OLED have risen significantly. The cost of the 512GB model has increased from $549 to $789, while the 1TB version has risen from $649 to $949. Losing such a device in the current climate would have been even more painful.
This noble act did not go unnoticed: another Reddit user gifted vgalz a video game as a reward for his effort and integrity.
