LG’s New FLiPP Technology Aims to Make OLED Screens More Affordable
LG Display’s new manufacturing method promises to significantly increase efficiency and reduce waste in OLED production.

OLED display technology is in a state of constant evolution, but a new innovation from LG Display, dubbed FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning), promises a major industry breakthrough. This technology aims to simplify the production process and reduce costs, ultimately providing consumers with higher-quality screens without a sharp increase in price.## What is FLiPP and how does it work?Traditionally, OLED panel manufacturing relies on Fine Metal Masks (FMM) to ensure the precise placement of organic materials. The FLiPP technology eliminates the need for these masks. Instead, materials are applied across the entire glass surface, protected by a special layer, while excess parts are removed through photolithography and technical processing. The primary advantage of this approach is production efficiency. According to LG, manufacturing efficiency increases from 75% to 93%. Furthermore, the utilization rate of organic materials rises from 40% to 74%, significantly reducing waste. The technology also expands the pixel illumination area, which provides 1.6 times higher brightness, 2.4 times greater durability, or 13% lower power consumption.## When will we see the first devices?According to LG Display’s CTO, Choi Yong-seok, the technology is currently in the early stages of development. In the near future, the company will move on to product design, followed by mass production. Initially, FLiPP technology will focus on smaller screens, specifically monitors and laptops.LG Display plans to begin mass production by the end of 2027. Consequently, it is highly likely that the first devices using this technology will appear at CES 2028. At this time, the company is already evaluating existing production lines to determine if they can be adapted to the new method, which would allow production to begin without additional investment.## What does this mean for consumers?Although television enthusiasts will have to wait a few more years for panels equipped with FLiPP technology, the changes in the monitor and laptop market look quite promising. The reduced cost and increased longevity of OLED panels mean that high-quality screens will become more accessible to both gamers and professionals. This news is relevant for the market in Georgia, where a wide selection of premium laptops and monitors is available in local stores. If LG’s plans are successfully implemented, OLED screens will no longer be the sole prerogative of the expensive segment in a few years, raising technological standards even further.
