Jeff Kaplan Severs All Ties With Overwatch
The former Blizzard lead explains why he has completely moved on from his most famous project.

Cutting Ties With the Past
In the gaming industry, particularly for Blizzard fans, the name Jeff Kaplan became synonymous with Overwatch. For years, he was not only the project lead but also the face of the team, regularly engaging with players and sharing developer updates. However, following his departure from the company in 2021, Kaplan made a radical decision: he completely severed his connection with Overwatch and any related activities.
In a recent interview, Kaplan explained that this step was essential for his mental well-being. He admitted that he has not even launched the game since April 2021. Furthermore, he is actively trying to cleanse his digital space of Overwatch content; he avoids Reddit threads, ignores YouTube videos, and even trains algorithms to ensure such content no longer appears in his feeds.
The World of Warcraft Lesson
Kaplan noted that leaving Overwatch was significantly easier than stepping away from World of Warcraft years earlier. WoW had become a way of life for him—he thought about the game during work hours and leisure time alike, often taking notes on changes to implement the next day. It was a painful process because his identity at the time was entirely intertwined with his professional output.
This experience taught him that the games developers work on do not belong to them; they are intellectual property owned by the company. This realization helped him maintain emotional distance regarding Overwatch. Kaplan notes that the game now belongs to other developers and players, while he remains focused on his new studio and a project currently titled The Legend of California.
Criticism of the Gaming Industry
Since leaving the company, Kaplan has not shied away from expressing his firm stance on the industry. He has publicly criticised players who disparage games they have never actually tried. According to him, if a product does not interest you, it is better to refrain from offering an opinion, as it adds nothing to the discourse.
He also spoke openly about the difficulties that accompanied the end of his career at Blizzard. Although Kaplan described his departure as one of the hardest moments of his career, he now looks toward the future with pride. For him, it was a "learning moment" that allowed him to begin a new chapter and separate his identity from the company's projects.
