Hyve Smart Package Locker: How to Protect Your Deliveries from Theft

As online shopping continues to grow, securing deliveries has become increasingly urgent. Couriers often leave packages on doorsteps, making them easy targets for so-called “porch pirates.” To combat this, the startup Hyve has created a smart safe that allows couriers to place items in a secure space.
Construction and Installation
The Hyve device is a box measuring 82 cm in height, width, and depth. With a volume of approximately 0.2 cubic metres, the company claims it can accommodate 80% of Amazon parcels. The safe is crafted from a combination of plastic and steel, making it sturdy enough to withstand casual vandalism. However, the assembly process is quite complex and tedious. The box does not include printed instructions, forcing users to rely on a video guide or PDF file, which can extend the assembly time to over an hour.
For security, the safe includes a special bracket that must be anchored to a solid surface. Without this, the 18-kilogram box would be easy for thieves to steal. The device is powered by four AA batteries, though it also features a solar panel that generates additional energy.
Functionality and Smart Features
The safe connects to an app via Wi-Fi. In its basic mode, the user sets a 4-digit PIN code that couriers use to open the box. While this universal code raises some security questions, it is generally sufficient to deter opportunistic thieves.

For more advanced security, there is a paid subscription (Essentials) costing $5 per month. This allows you to set individual PIN codes for different couriers, such as UPS, FedEx, or Amazon. The app sends an instant notification whenever the safe is opened, informing you exactly who accessed it.
The Main Challenge: Courier Habits
The biggest hurdle is not the technology itself, but convincing couriers to actually place the parcel inside the safe. Even though delivery companies provide fields for delivery instructions, many couriers do not follow specific notes about using a safe. Consequently, they often leave packages on the doorstep, leaving the device empty.
Nevertheless, the Hyve safe is a useful tool for those who are frequently away from home. If couriers in your region are willing to follow instructions, this device can significantly protect your deliveries. However, the implementation of such services is still in the early stages, and adapting to these types of safes may present an additional barrier for delivery personnel.
