How the Unique Showbiz System of Stranger Than Heaven Was Created
RGG Studio project director Mikinobu Abe reveals the development process behind their upcoming title.

Creative Exploration and Challenges
Stranger Than Heaven, the latest ambitious project from RGG Studio, offers players a fresh perspective on the world of show business. Game director Mikinobu Abe recently revealed the difficulties the team faced while developing the game's "Showbiz system." Within this mechanic, the protagonist, Makoto Daito, does more than just manage musical projects; he builds a business and seeks inspiration.
Abe noted that the most challenging aspect was defining what a music producer actually does. While the roles of a singer or a band are clear to everyone, the daily workflow of a producer remains obscure to many. Consequently, the studio conducted extensive research to ensure this process was reflected as realistically as possible in the game.
From Rhythm Games to Finding Inspiration
Interestingly, the developers initially considered incorporating rhythm elements. The team created a small rhythm-based mini-game, but they soon realised it failed to capture the emotional and managerial weight required to organize a show. As a result, the idea was scrapped, and the development process began anew.
Under the new concept, a producer is someone who manages finances while also providing the vision and inspiration for a show. In the game, as Makoto Daito explores the city, he observes his surroundings. He uses various sounds and objects—from the crackle of a fireplace to the ticking of an old clock—as sources of musical inspiration. This approach mirrors the real-life "antennae" that musicians possess as they constantly scan the world around them for new melodies.
What to Expect from the Premiere
In Stranger Than Heaven, players will be able to combine collected sound samples with composers to create unique musical pieces. This mechanic adds strategic depth, forcing players to observe their environment more closely. The producer's role here is not merely administrative; it is an integral part of the creative process.
The project is officially set to release on 15 January 2027. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, as well as PC. This work from RGG Studio is expected to set a new standard for music-management simulators, placing the focus not just on mechanics, but on the realization of a creative vision.
