Homebase Launches New AI Assistant for Small Businesses

Automation for Small Business
Managing small and medium-sized businesses, particularly those relying on hourly staff, is often a time-consuming and energy-draining task. Homebase, a company specializing in scheduling and payroll software, has introduced a new AI assistant designed to relieve owners of routine yet critical responsibilities.
The primary function of the Homebase Assistant is automated shift management. If an employee is suddenly unable to work, the system identifies an alternative candidate, contacts them, and fills the shift based on rules and historical data predefined by the owner. This process allows business owners to avoid spending time on calls and messages, enabling them to focus directly on their operations.
More Than a Scheduler
Beyond shift management, the AI assistant performs complex tasks: it independently creates work schedules, writes job descriptions, and conducts initial candidate screening. The system also monitors timecards, automatically flagging errors before payroll is processed. This includes tracking overtime and identifying discrepancies between scheduled and actual hours worked.

According to John Waldmann, founder and CEO of Homebase, most existing AI solutions only identify problems, whereas their new system actively resolves them. This approach is particularly significant for cafes, shops, and other small enterprises where every minute counts.
Availability and Outlook
At this stage, the Homebase Assistant is available only to a limited number of businesses. The company has not yet announced pricing or a date for a wider release, nor has it disclosed which AI models power the technology. However, according to data provided by the company, their AI products have already completed over 4.7 million administrative tasks since the beginning of 2025.
While large corporations are already actively using tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work to optimise workflows, the adoption of artificial intelligence by small businesses has been relatively slow. The Homebase initiative aims to bridge this gap. For entrepreneurs working with small teams, such automation tools may become an integral part of management in the future, significantly increasing business efficiency.
