Epic Games Pivots to AI-First Development, Delaying Disney Project
The studio is replacing manual coding with generative AI models, leading to production setbacks.

Epic Games is radically altering its video game production strategy, adopting an "AI-first" approach for its ambitious collaboration with the Walt Disney Company. The Unreal Engine creator plans to have artificial intelligence generate the entire software code and artistic visuals for an upcoming shooter game. Internal company correspondence reveals that developers will effectively cease traditional manual coding. Their primary role will shift to overseeing and managing AI models, such as Anthropic’s Claude. Internal documents indicate a workflow where visual assets are produced entirely through generative models with minimal human intervention. ## Delayed Release and Internal Challenges The $1.5 billion partnership between Disney and Epic Games was first announced in early 2024. According to the original roadmap, the new shooter, featuring characters from Marvel and Star Wars, was scheduled for release in March 2027. However, internal disruptions caused by the integration of AI into the production process, staff shortages, and slower-than-expected progress have significantly altered these plans. Citing anonymous sources, the game's release has been delayed indefinitely. It remains unclear when active marketing will resume or whether such large-scale integration of generative algorithms will prove successful in the high-budget gaming industry.
