Donald Trump opposes calls to slow down AI development

Dario Amodei, Chief Executive of Anthropic, published an extensive open letter calling on the artificial intelligence sector to slow down its pace of development and manage the process more prudently. The initiative gained unexpected support from other prominent industry figures, with OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly endorsing it on social network X, whilst Alphabet’s Demis Hassabis expressed cautious backing for Amodei's proposal.

However, American politicians do not share the tech executives' stance. As reported by The Verge, Donald Trump and US House Speaker Mike Johnson believe that AI industry leaders are overreacting and needlessly escalating the situation.

Competition with China and the global race

The primary argument raised by American politicians centres on maintaining global leadership in artificial intelligence. Donald Trump and Mike Johnson reckon that any pause or delay in AI progress would directly endanger the position of the United States, giving China an opportunity to surge ahead in the race.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Donald Trump noted that the United States currently leads China in AI and emphasised the necessity of preserving this advantage. According to Trump, whoever wins the technological race for artificial intelligence will ultimately prevail on the global stage. As a result, Washington views halting research as a strategic error.
