Cloudflare rolls out quantum-resistant TLS certificates

Cloudflare has officially announced plans to implement quantum-resistant TLS certificates. This move makes the company one of the first certificate authorities to adopt cryptographic methods capable of withstanding attacks from next-generation quantum computing power.
Hybrid protection system
Cloudflare stated that it will use an open-source platform capable of issuing both classical and post-quantum, so-called Merkle Tree certificates. Notably, these hybrid certificates will be available to both paid and free users. To ensure system scalability and establish trust across the global network, Cloudflare will acquire an existing trusted certificate root from CA GlobalSign.
According to the company, this innovation will allow millions of websites to switch to quantum protection at the click of a button, without affecting website performance speed. This represents a fundamental shift in web infrastructure, safeguarding data encryption and authentication for the future.
Long-term challenges
Despite this significant step, a complete transition will take years. The main challenge lies in creating quantum-resistant digital signatures that can be easily transmitted during web requests and logged in certificate transparency logs to prevent fraudulent certificate issuance. The process demands coordinated efforts from operating system, browser, and internet infrastructure developers.
For web developers and readers, including those in Georgia, this update signifies that security standards will rise significantly in the near future. The simplified model offered by Cloudflare will allow local companies to easily shield their resources against quantum threats, making a significant contribution towards strengthening global internet security.
