Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Mode: First Impressions
The latest iteration of the extraction shooter brings a new map and spontaneous missions to the franchise.

With the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, fans have long awaited the return of the DMZ mode. The 2026 version offers a new experience that further evolves the extraction shooter genre, where the primary goal is resource acquisition and safe exfiltration. Despite facing numerous competitors in the market, the new DMZ stands as a compelling entry.
A New World: The Hajin Region
The game takes place in Hajin, a fictional region in Korea. The map is expansive and diverse, featuring everything from densely populated cities and military outposts to rocky forests. While some buildings share visual similarities, the environment feels vibrant. Enemy patrols, helicopters, drones, and a moving train create a tense atmosphere where every step carries significant risk.
Dynamic Operations and PvPvE Dynamics
One of the most intriguing additions is "Dynamic Operations." These are spontaneous missions that appear as you navigate the map, ranging from escorting a VIP or delivering a package to eliminating a specific target. This system forces players to remain mobile rather than camping in one spot. As you complete more tasks, your rewards increase, but so does the danger, as information about these missions becomes visible to other players.
Gameplay and Character Progression
The shooting mechanics remain at the high level expected of Call of Duty. New movement capabilities, such as animation cancelling, make the game feel more dynamic and agile. Regarding characters, players can develop their operators with various passive skills. However, at this stage, the skill trees appear somewhat randomised, making the differences between characters more visual than functional.
In the Forward Operating Base (FOB), players can modify weapons and manage resources. Yet, mastering these new systems takes time; it remains unclear if investing large sums into weapon upgrades is worthwhile if the gear is inevitably lost upon death.
What to Expect?
The DMZ mode is currently in its early stages, with its true test arriving once the servers are fully populated. Despite some unclear mechanics, the Hajin region promises an intense and engaging experience. This mode certainly deserves attention, especially for those who enjoy strategic and tense shooters. In the near future, as the game undergoes further testing, it will become clearer how player conflicts and the economic system will be balanced.
