Avengers: Endgame Reclaims Box Office Crown: James Cameron Responds

Friendly Competition in the Film Industry
One of the longest-running rivalries in cinema has taken another turn. Thanks to special re-releases, Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame has once again overtaken Avatar to reclaim the top spot in global box office history. James Cameron, the director of Avatar, addressed the development with an official congratulatory message on social media.
Cameron shared artwork on Instagram depicting Iron Man surrounded by the Na'vi people of Pandora. The director congratulated Marvel on the win, noting that the re-release, titled Avengers: Endgame Encore, successfully drew audiences back to cinemas. This is not the first time Cameron has celebrated his colleagues' success in this manner. In 2019, when Avengers: Endgame first surpassed Avatar, the director made a similar gesture, though he predicted at the time that his film would eventually reclaim the lead—a prediction that came true in 2021.
Figures and Reality
According to Box Office Mojo, the total gross for Avengers: Endgame has reached $2.938 billion, while James Cameron’s Avatar sits in second place with $2.923 billion. Both films are nearing the historic $3 billion threshold, a milestone for the industry. Notably, third place is held by this year’s hit, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with $2.513 billion. Marvel achieved this result by utilizing archival footage and additional material ahead of the premiere of their upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December. Although the film saw a decline in revenue during its second week of re-release, it was sufficient to regain the top spot.
Why This Matters
For film enthusiasts, this rivalry is symbolic rather than hostile. Cameron's post confirms that there is healthy competition between the giants of the film industry, which ultimately benefits the audience. While critics have awarded Avengers: Endgame a score of 9.5/10 and Avatar a 9/10, both films are firmly cemented in cinematic history. For viewers, this serves as another reminder of the significant impact that franchise revivals and re-releases have on the global market. It is difficult to say whether the lead will change again, but it is clear that the film world remains in anticipation of new records.
