Apple's New Vision: Why Design Remains the Company's Top Priority
CEO John Ternus outlines how Apple balances engineering and aesthetics to enhance the user experience.

Design as the Foundation of Apple
Apple CEO John Ternus has publicly discussed the company's product philosophy and the central importance of design. According to Ternus, the primary focus when making any technological decision is to improve the user experience. This goes beyond mere practical functionality; often, visual effects and animations are what make a device more enjoyable to use.
Ternus emphasizes that at Apple, design is not just a surface-level consideration but the heart of the entire process. He notes that the company’s engineering and design teams work in constant collaboration. Designers understand engineering challenges, while engineers possess a deep respect for aesthetic decisions, ultimately leading to a harmonious result.
Functionality and 'Little Delights'
When evaluating design, the Apple team strictly distinguishes between features that improve the product and details that serve only to grab attention. However, Ternus notes that this approach does not exclude elements of 'play' or 'delight.' For example, the special animation displayed when opening the iPhone Duo’s inner screen serves no practical function, yet it makes the user's interaction with the device more pleasant.
Another interesting detail is the Kids Cue feature, which displays Snoopy characters on the iPhone Duo’s outer screen. This design choice helps direct children's attention toward the camera when taking photos. Ternus explains that new technical capabilities allow designers to experiment more and create solutions that were previously impossible.
Artificial Intelligence and Future Perspectives
Apple's strategy regarding artificial intelligence (AI) is also built on the user experience. Ternus explains that AI should be a tool that improves a product in such a way that the user might not even realize AI is behind a specific feature. The company focuses heavily on a personalised experience achieved by accessing data already present on the user's phone.
Since becoming Apple's CEO in September, John Ternus has increased his visits to the design studio. It appears he is striving to maintain the core of Apple's culture that has ensured the company's success for years. 'Products and technologies will change, but our working principles must remain the same,' says Ternus. This approach confirms that for Apple, design remains the key differentiator that connects technological innovation with the human experience.
