Apple Updates HomePod: Lower Latency and New Features

Apple has released the 27.2 software update for its smart speaker lineup, introducing several notable improvements. The most significant change is the ability to use the HomePod as an audio output device for Mac with drastically reduced latency.
New capabilities for Mac
Previously, using a HomePod as a Mac speaker caused noticeable audio lag, which hindered real-time tasks such as video calls or working with music production software like Logic Pro. With the 27.2 update, Apple has introduced direct connection technology that makes using the second-generation HomePod and HomePod mini 2 significantly more efficient on Macs that support Wi-Fi 6E. This feature does not require a special router, though it does require the computer itself to support Wi-Fi 6E.
Lock Controls and Sound Glow
Beyond technical performance, Apple has added a Lock Controls feature available on all HomePod generations. This allows users to disable the device's top touch panel, preventing accidental playback triggers or volume adjustments. When locked, a red indicator appears on the panel, though alarms, timers, and FaceTime calls remain manageable. Another addition is Sound Glow, which utilizes the HomePod’s LED matrix. When playing music or podcasts, the device illuminates in colours and rhythms that match the album art. The feature can be activated via the Home app, with voice command support expected to arrive alongside future Apple Intelligence expansions.
Surround Sound and future prospects
The update also introduces enhancements for Apple TV 4K. Users can now group four HomePods into a single "Home Theater" system to create a full surround sound experience. The system offers both a Surround Sound mode for movies and Whole Room Audio for music, ensuring balanced sound distribution throughout the room. While building such an audio setup is a significant investment, Apple is clearly positioning itself to compete with high-end audio systems from brands like Sonos. This update reinforces Apple's commitment to tightening its ecosystem, aiming to improve the home multimedia experience for users.
