Apple TV 4K and HomePod: Support for Four Speakers Now Ready

New Capabilities in the Apple Ecosystem
Apple has officially introduced the Release Candidate versions of iOS 17.2, tvOS 17.2, and HomePod Software 17.2, bringing significant changes to home audio systems. The primary highlight of this update is the addition of four-speaker support for the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, enabling users to achieve a full surround sound experience at home.
This feature allows HomePod speakers to be grouped into a single audio system. The hardware automatically detects the placement of the speakers within the room to calibrate volume levels and timing parameters for an optimal acoustic experience. Consequently, the speakers function not as individual units, but as part of a unified home theatre setup.
Which Devices Are Compatible?
Not all HomePods support this new functionality. Combining four speakers is possible using the HomePod mini 2, second-generation HomePods, or a combination of these, provided the pairs are compatible. It is important to note that first-generation HomePod and HomePod mini models do not support this feature. Furthermore, the surround sound capability is exclusive to the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
Configuration is managed directly through the Apple TV menu, though Apple has also added the ability for users to initiate the process via the iPhone remote control app, simplifying the installation and management of the home audio system.
When Will It Be Available?
Apple has already begun rolling out the software updates, with full versions expected to be available to the general public next week. Regarding hardware, the HomePod mini 2 hits the market on October 30, while sales for the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K begin on November 13. Pre-orders for both devices are already available on Apple's official website.
For users in Georgia, this news is significant as Apple’s smart-home ecosystem continues to evolve. While certain services may not be fully functional due to regional restrictions, the expansion of home theatre audio systems marks another step toward creating a more comfortable and high-quality entertainment environment for Apple users.
