Apple Introduces the First MacBook Pro With a Touchscreen
How the macOS interface has been adapted for touch

Apple has announced a significant milestone in the tech world: the new MacBook Pro, the first laptop in the company’s history to feature a touch-enabled PROLED XDR display. For years, Apple leadership maintained that touchscreens and mouse cursors were fundamentally incompatible. However, the new macOS design overcomes this challenge through sophisticated software engineering.
Adapting the interface for touch
Apple engineers have modified the macOS interface to react dynamically to touch input. For instance, elements in the Menu Bar expand automatically when touched, making precise selection easier. The same principle applies to window control buttons, which increase in size to ensure users can interact with them accurately without error.
The new system also introduces gesture-based controls. Users can swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to summon the Dock. Notably, many existing applications require no additional changes from developers, as macOS automatically translates touch inputs into mouse clicks. This makes scrolling through websites, zooming into photos, and using drag-and-drop functionality feel entirely natural.
Dynamic Island and professional capabilities
The traditional notch on the new MacBook Pro has been replaced by the Dynamic Island. Positioned at the top of the display, it now houses Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI. A convenient new feature allows users to pull down the Dynamic Island to reveal a floating widget, providing quick access to Siri responses and search results.
Touch control is not limited to basic tasks. Apple has specifically optimized professional software, including DaVinci Resolve and Logic Pro, to make tasks like colour correction and audio editing more intuitive and precise when using touch.
Pricing and availability
The new MacBook Pro is available for order now, with official sales beginning on Friday, November 6. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch version is priced at $3,399. For users, this launch introduces an entirely new culture of laptop usage, where the keyboard and touchscreen work in harmony.
