Apple Increases iPhone Duo Production by 44 Percent

Demand Exceeds Expectations
Apple's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has triggered unprecedented interest upon its market debut. After pre-orders opened last week, shipping estimates slipped to January within just a few hours. In response, the company has instructed suppliers to increase production plans by 44%.
According to supply chain sources, Foxconn and other component manufacturers have already received directives to ramp up output. While the initial plan targeted 9.7 million units, the new goal is 14 million units within the first 12 months.
Production Challenges and Reality
Adjusting these plans will not be straightforward. In recent months, there were concerns regarding potential production bottlenecks, primarily tied to the complexity of the hinge mechanism, display, and assembly process. Analyst Jeff Pu suggested in September that technical limitations might restrict production to only 6 million units this year.

Although Apple has increased its order volume, this does not guarantee an immediate end to iPhone Duo shortages in stores. The final outcome depends entirely on the efficiency of the assembly process. However, a positive trend is emerging: some customers who placed pre-orders have already seen their delivery dates moved forward.
Market Impact
Experts predict that Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone segment will accelerate the entire industry. Global shipments of foldable devices are projected to grow by 25.7% in 2026 and 59.1% in 2027, compared to a 7.4% growth rate in 2025.
The iPhone Duo officially launches on 23 October. In the US, it carries a starting price of $1,999, though Apple has warned customers that in-store availability will be limited. The company has also set a purchase limit of two phones per customer. For Apple enthusiasts, this news is significant, as it signals a strategic shift for the company and highlights the future of foldable technology.
