Anthropic President: AI Partners Are Driving People Apart
Daniela Amodei warns that AI-generated romantic partners foster social isolation and threaten to erode essential human connections.

A Dangerous Trend: Why You Shouldn't Seek Love in Chatbots
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, platforms offering virtual “friends” or “partners” are gaining popularity. However, Anthropic president Daniela Amodei views this as one of the most dangerous and misguided applications of the technology. She argues that AI-generated romantic relationships serve only to further alienate people from one another.
Amodei noted that modern technology, much like social media, frequently replaces genuine, face-to-face communication. She pointed to the impact of social media, which has already reduced direct human contact in favour of virtual spaces. Consequently, there is growing skepticism regarding whether technology can truly bring people closer together.
Claude Will Never Be Your Partner
The Anthropic leader emphasises that there are fundamental human relationships that artificial intelligence will never be able to replace. She stated that models like Claude should never be viewed as substitutes for a therapist, a manager, or a romantic partner. On the contrary, the importance of genuine human bonds will only grow in the future, as they remain an inseparable part of human nature.

In Amodei’s view, the primary purpose of AI should not be to foster isolation, but to handle routine and tedious tasks. For instance, in the healthcare sector, AI can rapidly provide medical information to doctors, giving them more time to interact directly with patients. This approach would allow people to spend more of their free time with family and friends.
New Safety Rules and Company Growth
Anthropic is actively working to strengthen its model safety policies. The company recently updated its usage guidelines for Claude, which will come into effect on 12 November. The new restrictions prohibit the use of the model for disinformation campaigns, issues related to weapons, and, crucially, role-playing with minors.
Meanwhile, the company is seeing financial success. In the third quarter, Anthropic’s revenue reached $16.8 billion—a significant milestone for a company reportedly preparing for a stock market debut in November. Despite this technological progress, Anthropic’s leadership continues to urge that technology should serve to strengthen human connections, not replace them.
