Amazon's New Kindle (2026): Is an Upgrade Worth It?
A sleeker look and improved display, but at what cost?

Refreshed Design and Hardware
Amazon has introduced an updated version of its most accessible e-reader, the Kindle. The 2026 model marks a significant departure from its predecessors, with the company focusing on hardware improvements alongside software refinements. The device is now thinner and lighter, and in response to user feedback, the power button has been relocated to the right edge.
Particularly notable is the aluminium chassis version, which offers 32GB of storage. Both the plastic and aluminium models now feature a flush-front display, giving the device a more premium aesthetic. However, the thinner bezels may hinder a comfortable grip, which caused several accidental page turns during our testing.
Display Quality and Limitations
The 2026 Kindle features a new E Ink Carta 1300 display, offering significantly better contrast and text sharpness. Despite this, the device still lacks essential features such as warm light and water resistance. The latter is particularly surprising for the premium aluminium version, which is positioned at a higher price point in the market.

Software-wise, the device remains largely unchanged. The new firmware adds only the ability to group books into series within the library, a feature also available on older models. Notably, in compliance with EU regulations, Amazon has introduced the ability to replace the battery, a positive step for users in the long term.
Price and Choice
The base model of the new Kindle starts at $149.99. The aluminium version, priced at $189.99, competes directly with the Kindle Paperwhite range. Our testing suggests that, given the small price difference, purchasing the new aluminium Kindle is less rational, as the Paperwhite offers significantly more functionality.
Ultimately, the 2026 Kindle is a quality device for those seeking a refreshed design and a better screen. However, the lack of features and the increased price diminish its competitiveness. If water resistance and adjustable screen warmth are important to you, it is likely better to consider other models or offerings from competing brands.
