Amazon Pledges $1bn to Communities Near Data Centres

As cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure expand, Amazon is attempting to ease local community discontent. The company has pledged to donate over $1 billion over the next five years to communities located directly near its data centres.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Chief Executive Matt Garman stated that local communities themselves will decide how the money is distributed. Funding will be directed towards areas such as education, job training, affordable electricity tariffs, and the conservation of energy and water resources.
Energy and water resources
The construction of data centres across the globe frequently sparks protests due to the vast amounts of electricity and water these facilities consume. In response, Amazon has promised that the operation of new centres will not increase electricity bills for local residents or harm water supplies.
According to the company, its goal is to become "water positive" by 2030, returning more water to nature than its systems consume. Amazon claims that 75 per cent of its implemented projects have already met this benchmark.
Despite such a large-scale offer, the environmental impact and growing resource consumption of major tech companies remain central topics of public debate and criticism.
