Amazon launches $250 Echo Studio equipped with built-in camera

Amazon has officially introduced a new premium smart speaker, the Echo Studio with Home Camera, priced at $250. The device combines a high-quality audio system and a home surveillance camera inside a single body. Alongside the new flagship product, the company also unveiled standard and kids versions of the Echo Dot.
The release aims to integrate Amazon's ecosystem even deeper into users' daily routines. However, the device's continuous surveillance capabilities have drawn close scrutiny from privacy and security specialists.
Alexa+ Visual Intelligence and Technical Specifications
The new Echo Studio features a camera that acts as a home security system when residents are away, transforming into a visual assistant when someone is in the room. According to the company, this integration gives Alexa+ what it calls Visual Intelligence. For example, the speaker can explain the rules of a board game laid out in the room or help users reorder an item shown directly to the camera.

By the end of the year, Amazon plans to introduce compatibility between the Echo Studio and Amazon Fire TV devices. This will allow users to transfer video calls initiated through the speaker's camera straight to their television screens.
On the audio front, the device incorporates an upgraded room adaptation system. The speaker detects the user's distance from the device and adjusts the sound level automatically, ensuring music playback remains comfortably balanced no matter where someone moves in the room.
This new generation of speakers is powered by Amazon's proprietary AZ3 processor. The chip enables faster voice command recognition for Alexa, improved background noise cancellation, and local data processing on the device itself, making interactions with the voice assistant feel less robotic.
Smart Home Management and Ecosystem
The Echo Studio incorporates Omnisense technology, which monitors ambient conditions in the room to automatically regulate settings such as temperature and lighting. The utility of this ecosystem is further enhanced as Amazon has turned the Echo Dot into a fully fledged smart home hub capable of managing other compatible devices.

This shift effectively eliminates the need for the standard Amazon Echo as a standalone smart home hub, creating a more streamlined ecosystem structure.
Privacy and User Concerns
The arrival of devices with continuous recording and tracking capabilities is raising an increasing number of questions. With similar tech expanding across the market — such as Apple Watch conversation recording tools or Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses — personal data security remains a central point of debate.
Scepticism among users is grounded in past experience: previous security incidents involving Amazon's Ring cameras, where employees accessed customer video feeds, led to a $5 million legal settlement.

The Echo Studio with Home Camera includes a physical button that disconnects power to both the microphones and the camera, though using it effectively disables the speaker's smart capabilities. It also features an LED indicator that illuminates whenever visual data is being transmitted to cloud servers.
Nevertheless, key questions remain unanswered — including whether Alexa+'s visual features require explicit opt-in consent, whether the camera continuously analyses the room, or if it activates only after a specific voice command.
For consumers interested in building smart home ecosystems, including readers in Georgia, the new Echo Studio offers intriguing functionality, but striking a balance between privacy and device autonomy remains a primary challenge.
