Akai is Developing the Open-Source MPC Sample Key
The company is empowering users to customize their hardware with bespoke software.

A New Era for Music Technology
Akai, a long-standing leader in the music production market, has taken a bold and unexpected step. The company is developing a new device, the MPC Sample Key, which is built on open-source principles rather than traditional closed hardware systems. This means users and programmers will have the ability to intervene in the device's operation, modify its software, and add custom features.
The MPC Sample Key is a 37-key instrument conceptually based on the company’s budget-friendly MPC Sample. However, unlike the high-end MPC Key 37, this new model lacks traditional touch pads. Instead, samples are triggered directly via the keyboard, giving the instrument the functional feel of a synthesizer.
Modding Culture and Vibe-Coding
Akai’s decision to showcase the device’s capabilities even before an official announcement is intended to support the modding community. Videos circulating on social media already show developers running renowned synthesizers like Native Instruments Massive, as well as virtual analogue and FM synths, on the hardware. One demo even features the device running on a completely custom operating system.
According to Jack O’Donnell, CEO of inMusic, the company’s brands—including Akai—will actively collaborate with developers in the future. This includes providing early access to hardware and creating a software development kit (SDK), allowing independent programmers to build their own applications for Akai hardware.
What This Means for Musicians
Akai’s plans extend beyond just this new model. Reports suggest that features related to open-source modifications may also be extended to the standard MPC Sample, indicating that Akai intends to democratize and open up its entire platform.
For musicians and producers who frequently seek flexible and personalized tools, this is a significant opportunity. When technical limitations are removed and a musical instrument becomes a platform where users can realize their own vision, the creative process reaches a new level. Although the MPC Sample Key is still in development, its concept is already shifting expectations for modern music technology.
