Acer Googlebook 14: A Premium 2-in-1 Laptop from Google

Following the market arrival of Google's new Googlebook OS, Acer has introduced its first premium-class laptop: the Acer Googlebook 14. Unlike budget-friendly Chromebooks, this device is designed for users seeking powerful and sophisticated hardware. It is currently the only model in the series to feature a 2-in-1 design, allowing the laptop to transform into a tablet.
Design and Display
Constructed from a magnesium-aluminium alloy, the Acer Googlebook 14 combines durability with a lightweight frame. Weighing approximately 1.14 kilograms, the device is highly portable. Its 14-inch OLED display, featuring a resolution of 2880 x 1800, offers vibrant colours and high responsiveness, which is particularly beneficial for touch navigation.
The lid features a "Glowbar," a light strip that changes colours during various activities, such as charging or when using the Gemini AI assistant. However, because the strip is located on the back of the lid, its visibility to the user is limited.
Technical Specifications and Functionality
The base model is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 5 Series 3 processor, 16GB of RAM, and fast internal storage. The laptop provides three USB-C ports, including one Thunderbolt 4, ensuring robust connectivity. For security, a fingerprint scanner is included, while the webcam features a physical privacy shutter.
A primary advantage of Googlebook OS is its native support for Android applications. Thanks to the 2-in-1 design, using apps in tablet mode is convenient, though some system-level issues remain. For instance, the desktop orientation does not always rotate automatically, which can hinder the interface experience.
Pricing and Value
The Acer Googlebook 14 starts at $899. Purchasers receive a 12-month subscription to Google AI Pro, three months of YouTube Premium, and a one-year GeForce Now subscription. The device is positioned as a competitor to the MacBook Air and Windows-based ultrabooks. While the price is higher than that of budget Chromebooks, its premium materials and versatility justify the cost.
Availability of such devices remains limited in Georgia; however, the expansion of Google's new ecosystem may eventually lead to more choices for users in the region.
